Automating Your Personalization Website

In the apparel decoration market, it’s difficult to succeed without offering some type of product personalization. More and more companies are offering personalized text, monograms or designs as an option to their product lines. This is especially true in the rapidly growing market of online shopping. Web shops now offer their customers the ability to preview their personalized products visually, which is a great way to close the sale. All of this has made having a great website a vital part of a successful apparel decoration business.

The most important
part of a website is not what your customer sees, but what goes on behind the curtain. Having a great-looking designer and web shop is important of course, but it’s the engine behind your website that connects it to your production cycle that can really impact your bottom line. A valuable personalization solution is one that allows your orders to flow seamlessly from purchase through to production. This is true for all methods of personalization, be it embroidery, laser engraving, digital print or something more.

This powerful personalization process
is made possible by implementing automation software. Automation is scalable and can be built upon your current ordering system to render a personalized and production-ready file in seconds. This type of software will grow along with your organization so you don’t need to worry about upgrading in the future or purchasing a totally new product. As you add more machines, designs, and employees, automation technology will increase your business’ efficiency and streamline your production cycle.

Not only will this process increase the number of designs you can produce and decrease your turnaround time, it will also lower many production costs. Operator errors are eliminated because orders flow from your website through to production completely untouched. There is no manual input involved in loading a design at all. In fact, customers to your website will visually sign off on the finished product before placing an order, meaning there will be no spelling mistakes, colour problems or other errors that cause lost product or even worse, lost customers.

Hands-off automation software can be combined with a simple barcode scanner to significantly increase your machine operators’ productivity, and enable them to manage multiple machines at once. All the operator has to do after scanning the order is hoop or frame the garment and press start on the machine. In most cases, operators can handle double the number of machines at once. This will greatly reduce the labor costs needed to fulfill your orders and can help to expand your business by adding more machines to your production floor without the need to add more operators.

Great automation software is designed specifically for high volume personalization and will read orders directly from your existing order information system, creating professional quality files that are ready for production. Successful organizations around the world are adding personalized apparel decoration to their websites and seeing remarkable increases in efficiency and reductions in cost. Don’t miss the opportunity to automate your apparel decoration business and capitalize on the ever-growing personalization market!

Many embroidery machines offer optional support for barcode technology. Implementing a simple barcoding system makes it easy for machine operators to load designs quickly to complete more designs in a shift. This process results in less machine downtime and more profits for your business.

Barcoding will also reduce production issues that are created by operator error when they are trying to load designs individually or through other means such as floppy disk or USB. A proper barcoding system will boost productivity and help manage your production floor.

Once you’re ready to take another step toward improving efficiency you can add an automation system to your production floor. Automation software lets operators pull designs directly from a centralized database using the barcode scanner. It reads orders directly from your existing order information system and eliminates the tedious design retrieval process. A production automation solution ensures that your production floor is finely tuned to maximize profitability.

Barcoding and automation systems are specifically designed for high volume personalization creation and can develop professional-quality files directly from computer data or from online order forms. A simple barcode scanning system can significantly increase your machine operator’s productivity, and enable them to manage multiple machines at once. When combined with automation, it leads to lower expenses, increased profit and more time to focus on sales and other aspects of your business.

Embroidery Embraces the Cloud

Tajima Software

Cloud technology is making a massive impact on various industries around the world and the embroidery business is no exception. Moving technology into the cloud opens the door for various mobile and social possibilities. It enables businesses to take their productivity on the go and access their important files securely on multiple devices.

For the technological novice, the term cloud refers to computing that is done over the Internet and in most cases this is used to describe software services. Moving to the cloud means mobility and collaboration. Data is not confined to a hard drive on one user’s computer or even on an internal network. Files are stored in server farms and can be accessed, shared, edited and saved over the internet.

The advances that have been made in cloud technology in just the past couple of years have been remarkable. Apple, Microsoft, Google and other leading technological innovators are all offering numerous cloud-based services to their customers and partners.

One great example of a cloud-based system is Dropbox, a popular program that allows users to share files remotely over the internet. You can share files with an individual, a small group or make them public for all to view. Each individual has their own Dropbox account where they can only access folders that they created themselves or that they have been permitted to access by the friends or coworkers.

This exciting new technology has now been harnessed by apparel decoration software experts. Web applications have been developed that allow users to manage, edit and browse their embroidery artwork over the Internet. This amazing technology can be accessed from your smartphone, laptop, tablet or any other device connected to the Internet.

Apparel decoration businesses that implement cloud technology into their processes will quickly see the benefit both in terms of profitability and efficiency. Cloud technology now allows embroidery professionals to monitor the status of their machines as well. You can see if a design is completed, if the machine is running or if there was a stoppage due to something like a thread break. Users can even send designs to their machines from anywhere. Cloud technology is allowing businesses to take their embroidery productivity on the go and to expand their reach through social networking.

When you make the decision to take your embroidery business into the cloud, it is essential to partner with an organization that has a track record of success and dependability. Looking ahead, the coming years promise even more advances in cloud computing meaning more ways to share and access your materials.

When making the choice to adopt cloud technology it is important to consider privacy and security. These are generally regarded as the biggest concerns by cloud users. Technology has now progressed to the point that these concerns are becoming obsolete. Choosing an organization with a reputation for quality and consistent software will solve these concerns.

Add International Flavor to Your Lettering Designs

With increasingly multicultural societies and the prevalence of online stores, it’s easier than ever to sell to a global market. Many apparel decoration businesses are opening up their offerings to secure more international customers. One way to do this is to offer lettering and personalization in their native alphabet or character set.

Software and lettering companies make specific fonts for many languages including: Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Russian, Greek, Hebrew and Arabic. Originally, these fonts were created specifically for the countries that use a particular set of characters. Now however, a trend is emerging and these fonts are being purchased by companies from all corners of the globe in order to sell to an international audience.

Finding quality international fonts can be a challenge, so it’s important to do your research and view samples before making a purchase. Each alphabet or character set has its own special intricacies that need to be taken into account to ensure they are being displayed properly. You must also be aware of the difference between a traditional language font, and a font that is simply stylized. It may seem minimal to someone who isn’t familiar with a foreign language, but the application of such fonts have major differences.

Another thing to keep in mind is the size of font files. Some character sets like Japanese and Chinese use a huge number of characters that could take up a lot of space and take a while to install. But, if you have the space, these could be the key to unlocking a whole new set of customers for your apparel decoration business and differentiating yourself from the competition.

In most cases, you can find these international fonts being sold in packs ranging in size from three to ten fonts. These are fonts that can be used on a variety of fabrics and at many different sizes to accommodate almost any embroidery need. If you’re looking to for a sales edge in the international market, localized fonts are a great way to expand your business and are worth your time to invest.

Embroidery software has seen quite a few new options spring up recently in regards to anchor point functionality. These new and convenient features will help you perfects your design down to the finest detail.

Add Anchors
It is now possible to add new anchors to a selected outline segment with the click of a mouse. This applies to both digitized embroidery and artwork segments.

Adding Multiple Anchor Points
Users can now add multiple new anchor points to a segment in sequence. Select a specific node, and choose to insert before or after the selected node. Then, new anchor points may be inserted into the segment, just like creating a line.

Converting Anchor Points
There is a quick way to convert between different types of anchor points. A single click can make a selected smooth point change to a straight point, and straight, cusp, and symmetric points change to smooth.

Average Anchor Points Alignment
You can now choose the alignment of anchor points the same way you do for the segments with the alignment tool. Using this option allows you to align or average the selected anchors, either vertically or horizontally.

Move Anchor Points
It is now possible move selected anchor points a precise distance vertically and horizontally by entering the amount of displacement you need.

Snap to Anchor Points
Users can set the anchor points on one segment to snap to the anchor points of another. This can be very useful, for example, when trying to get linear segments to line up exactly. When you drag the end of one segment to the end of the other, the two terminal points will snap together to make a continuous line.

While some of these features may seem like no big deal, they will save digitizers plenty of time in the long run and make previously tedious tasks, very simple.

Working from home and from the road are essential parts of business, especially in the apparel decoration industry. Decorators now have the ability to bring their designs with them to client visits thanks to some amazing innovations in cloud technology. Having the ability to edit designs from the road is another great new feature available to decorators. It makes it easy to personalize designs from a mobile device.

Let’s say you’re visiting a client that runs the local equestrian club…

You can bring your tablet along with you to the visit and pull up all of the designs that you have tagged with “horses”. Once the client picks a design that they like, you can personalize it right in your mobile device to show them how it would look with all of the names of club members.

Now let’s say you run your own shop that includes a storefront and a production room with a couple of embroidery machines…

If you’re tasked with taking care of the storefront and production at the same time it can be a real pain. With new innovations in cloud technology, now you can keep an eye on your designs and machines while you make sales at the storefront. Check in to see if a design has completed sewing, what’s next in the design queue and if any of your machines have stopped or encountered a thread break or other error.

Whether you’re working from home, at a client visit or sitting on the beach you can always stay connected to your business and have access to the design library you worked so hard to create! If you haven’t already, now is the time to invest in cloud technology.

Personalization is one of the fastest growing segments within the apparel decoration industry. Customer demand is high and there is currently a great opportunity for decorators to profit from this trend. The key to maximizing profitability in the personalization space is the implementation of new and evolving technologies to improve efficiency and productivity. These new technologies save businesses time and money by streamlining their personalization and ordering processes.

Many businesses want to offer personalization services, but find it too time consuming or labor-intensive to make a substantial profit. However, new technological innovations are pushing these obstacles aside and making it simple to reduce the labour hours and other costs associated with mass personalization. For the digital printing world, Variable Data is the most important technology that can be adopted to simplify the personalization process. Those who have joined the movement towards Variable Data have become increasingly successful and have had a significant impact in terms of organizational growth and production. Variable Data technology improves the productivity of digital print companies by significantly reducing the time it takes to create multiple personalizations that are similar in appearance.

A Variable Data solution works by creating customizable templates within a design program. This allows both the text and graphics properties of a design to be swapped or edited without the need to resize or reposition these elements before sending them to print. This makes it ideal for any business that often deals with orders from teams, clubs and special events. Variable Data also allows the user to replace personalized text and designs instantly using simple data fields and by importing data from spreadsheets. All personalization files can be generated on the same server, using fonts with the same appearance, rules, and vector engine. This results in consistent, high-quality results that businesses can, and do depend on.

Enterprise networking solutions are equipped with operator login and logout functions that will track operator machine usage using barcode technology. Operators can login to their embroidery machines by scanning their operator ID, directly into the control panel of the embroidery machine and their production is monitored throughout their shift.

An Operator Summary Report is produced that includes number of stitches, number of runs, operator login and logout times, number of resews, a list of jobs processed by the operator, and other production statistics. This ensures that your operators are motivated to hit their numbers and you can be sure that you are getting the best productivity possible.

In addition to operator efficiency, you can gain great insight into the functionality of your machines. Reports can be generated on machine production including running time, down time, pieces produced per hour and total production. The Machine Summary Report contains information such as total running time, total down time, total stitches produced, number of runs, number of pieces produced, stitches per hour, a list of completed jobs, and other production statistics. Monitor each and every detail of your machines and your production floor.

Make informed decisions for machine and operator planning with data sent directly from the embroidery machines. There is no need to rely on manually created production reports that are time consuming and prone to error. This information enables production managers to better plan their production schedule and quickly respond to production issues.

Reporting statistics for operators and machines can be saved as XLS reports or monitored through an administrative dashboard remotely over the internet with up to the minute information. Since reporting is available online, it is accessible from any PC or tablet on your corporate intranet using a modern web browser.

If you operate a large organization, an effective enterprise networking solution is essential in maximizing productivity and increasing profitability. It is important to choose an enterprise networking solution with a reputation for quality and consistency.

Trending Toward Personalization and Automation

The garment decoration industry is in a period of rapid technological innovation. Organizations are quickly adopting new technologies and business practices to help with productivity and profitability. One such change is the movement toward garment personalization and the automation of this process. It is becoming more and more difficult for digital print and embroidery businesses to remain competitive without offering a mass personalization solution to their customer base.

Personalization is a segment of the business that provides a very high profit margin. The automation process builds on this, allowing you to keep costs low while maximizing productivity. Together, personalization and automation are making a large impact across both the digital print and embroidery worlds.

The personalization process is very straightforward. Your customer creates their design from scratch or based on a defined template. They can add their name, initials or a personalized message to the garment. A personalization solution gives the customer the opportunity to see a rendering of the design and check for any mistakes before approving it and submitting for production. Once submitted, your ordering system will receive the design and your operator will be able to send it to the machine for production. Personalization is great for building a customer base in sports teams, clubs, and events because a single template can serve as the basis for hundreds of designs.

There are several businesses that have already followed the industry trend toward personalizing garments. This is a great step in the right direction but the full potential of their business is not realized until an automation solution is implemented. Automation will improve efficiency, consistency, and profitability in any area of apparel personalization.

Automation solutions will seamlessly integrate into your current production processes, no matter how large or small your apparel decoration business is. An automation solution will save you time and labor costs, improving delivery times and eliminating costly errors associated with manual input.

The Rise of Retail-Specific Embroidery

Recently, retail embroidery has seen a boom in business based primarily on customers’ demand for garment personalization. The retail embroidery business has yet to reach its full potential and there’s still plenty of room for growth in the space. Retail shops that have one or two embroidery machines are beginning to take advantage of the demand and are offering personalized garments to their growing customer base.

The most important asset that these retail companies and others looking to enter the business, can implement is retail-specific embroidery software. This software simplifies the personalization process to the point that even novices to apparel decoration will be able to learn in minutes.

Instead of digitizing each and every stitch of a design, retail embroidery software allows the user to make adjustments to the design as a whole. Simply put, these systems can be seen as lettering tools that also allow for the inclusion of embroidery designs. Users can make changes to the size, colour, slant and font of their personalized text. They can then add a design to their garment such as a mascot or logo. Retail-specific embroidery software will improve the efficiency of your business and capitalize on a growing market.

Vector Based Embroidery - Fusion Features

Tajima Software
Tajima Software

A terrific addition to VBE software is the ability to have a fusion feature included in your software. Fusion features work by taking vector artwork from popular design programs and turning them into top quality embroidery. Fusion features can import vector files while preserving the original vector points and colours, aiding in the VBE process of turning the artwork into embroidery with speed, precision and ease.

The editing process with fusion features updates files dynamically, meaning any changes made to the artwork will be automatically reflected in the embroidery file. Changing stitch types is easy as well, simply convert the satin to a complex fill or vice versa, or choose from any of the other available stitch types. A fusion feature will also match the colours in your design to the actual threads that connect to your embroidery machine.

In addition to these tools, your VBE software should also include an auto breakup feature. This type of feature will increase the productivity of your embroidery business. In a single automated step, an auto breakup feature slices complex satin segments into simpler segments which are then combined and branched appropriately before automatically applying stitch direction lines. This time-saving tool takes all the guesswork and grunt work out of creating a beautiful, embroidery design.

Traditionally, digital print companies and their professional designers are accustomed to the use of graphic programs such as CorelDRAW® and Adobe® Illustrator®. The transition from these programs to most embroidery software is a rough one. Learning to work with new file types and mastering the embroidery technique can be a headache.

The solution to this issue is to install an embroidery plug-in program to either your CorelDRAW® or Adobe® Illustrator® program. Once the plug-in is installed, designers do not need to worry about learning new tools. The only learning curve is to understand the basic embroidery stitch types. The plug-in will offer all other features necessary for control over design quality with Corel® or Adobe®.

Organizations that have implemented Vector Based Embroidery or a plug in to either Corel® or Adobe® are sure to experience an increase in productivity. The end result is high quality embroidery that will dazzle your customers. By employing VBE software, you will eliminate the hours upon hours of time spent recreating artwork, and instead, spend that time growing your business.

When choosing your embroidery software, Vector Based Embroidery and a top rate plug-in to either CorelDRAW® or Adobe® Illustrator® are essential for best results in terms of digitizing quality and productivity.

Machine Attachments and Multimedia Decoration Tech

Digitizing software offers some great multimedia technology through machine attachments. Beautiful designs can be created using effects like coiling, taping and cording. Coiling, taping and cording are unique embroidery effects created using special embroidery heads that are operational with a limited number of machines. Users can easily create these multimedia embroidery techniques using a simple run stitch, and special machine commands, saving hours of manual effort.

Coiling
Coiling is a method to display three alternating threads by winding two kinds of coiling threads around a core thread. This technique can be done at different intervals to create unique looks and textures. An embroidery thread, core thread and coiling thread are sewn together using a machine attachment. Your embroidery machine head twists the upper thread and lower fiber/yarn together to create the unique coiling stitch.

Taping
A taping effect refers to the attaching of fabric tape or yarn on fabric using a machine attachment. This creates a new and stunning type of embellishment. There are a number of different attachments that can be selected to deal with a wide array of materials.

Cording
Cording is exactly as it sounds, creating a rope-like stitch that gives a unique look and feel. Cording requires a specific attachment and the machine commands are defined from inside of your embroidery software.

Users can control machine parameters from within their software instead of on the machine panel, which saves time and reduces errors. No longer do users have to create detailed stitch editing or manual set up to handle mixed machine commands. Taping, coiling and cording designs can be created easily from outline segments as long as the proper software and machine attachments are in place.

Advanced Chenille Features

Tajima Software
Tajima Software

There have been plenty of recent innovations that have contributed to making chenille embroidery easier than ever. Automatic sequencing of chains and mosses for shapes with holes minimizes travel stitches, so you have cleaner designs that run perfectly on machines. Automatic filtering ensures that stitch angles are optimal machine operation. Once you have a handle on basic chenille embroidery, you can look at these advanced features to further customize your design.

Auto Hole

Auto Hole is a new feature available for chenille and spiro chenille segments. The Auto Hole feature creates a cut out using another embroidery segment as a template. For example, you can use this feature to allow a text segment to be placed in the middle of the chenille, without having it overlap. The Auto Hole generation process also adds a moss walk segment on the inside of the hole shape that is generated. The segment that you use to create the hole may be placed beneath, or on top of, the Chenille segment.

Cut Outline

A Cut Outline option creates an outline around a chenille segment. This outline is an artwork segment that matches the edge of the selected chenille, but is offset by a small distance. The chenille cut outline will be offset based on the outline of the chenille segment, rather than the edge of the stitches of the chenille. Any chain, moss, or lattice stitches of the segment may already have a degree of offset from this outline, based on the settings in the chenille properties. So, you may have to take these offsets into account when adding your cut line offset. Another setting in the Chenille Cut Offset Dialog allows you to set number of times the outline is repeated; subsequent cut outlines will be offset by once again as much distance as the first outline. For example, if the first is placed 3mm away from the chenille segment, the second will be at 6mm, and so on. The artwork segment generated with the Chenille Cut can then be converted to any type of segment (such as a laser cut, or a run stitch) that the operator can use to cut the chenille felt.

In order to create an appliqué segment, you must understand the three stitch types that are used to create an appliqué border.

Run Stitch
The run stitch outlines the shape of the appliqué on the fabric. The run stitch also lets the operator know exactly where to place the appliqué piece on the fabric. After this stitch, the machine stops so the appliqué can be placed on the fabric.

Tack Down Stitch
The tack down stitch fastens the appliqué to the fabric. This stitch ensures that the appliqué piece does not shift or move while the appliqué border sews.

Appliqué Border Stitch
The appliqué border is similar to the steil border. The appliqué border outlines the shape of the appliqué and securely fastens the appliqué to the fabric, finishing the design.

A software program that includes Automatic Applique will do this for you but it is still good to understand how the process works and the role of each of the components. You should know that it’s possible to have an appliqué segment with a run stitch and appliqué stitch, and without tack down stitches.

For Applique border segments that overlap each other, it is now possible to “clip” or remove the overlapped portions automatically from within your software.

Applique Fabrics
Use an Appliqué Fabrics setting to add a fabric background to an Appliqué segment. This can simulate the effect of having real fabric in the segment. You can use either the fabric images supplied with your software, or import you own images to use as fabric background.

Moving the Machine Frame
You can choose where to move the embroidery machine’s frame while placing appliqués. You can set the distance between the top of the appliqué segment and the position where the head will stop after the run positioning or tack down stitch is sewn.

Use your software’s Appliqué Cut tool to create a segment you can save and output to an appliqué cutter machine. To use this feature, you punch Run stitches around an area where you would like to apply an appliqué, and then use Appliqué Cut for the areas where you want to place tack down stitches for the appliqué.

One area of apparel decoration that is currently seeing a lot of innovation and growth is sequin. Traditionally, markets for sequin designs are niche, meaning they are most popular in certain pockets of the world - most notably in Italy. However, there has recently been an expansion in interest and in turn, an increase in focus from software and equipment manufacturers.

Automatic Gap

Apparel decoration software has made the sequin experience much more user friendly by implementing features to quicken the process and improve sequin design quality. One such feature is called automatic gap, which eliminates the addition of extra sequins and tack down stitches where a segment crosses over itself. This feature will make your design much cleaner and will also help save on materials.

Sequin Repeats

On the other side of the spectrum, apparel decoration software now enables users to place repeats of sequins and tack down stitches on a desired segment. This process can now be done with ease and the user can select the exact number of repeats that are placed in the design.

Variable Spacing

Setting the distance between sequins is also easier than it has been in the past. You can find settings in your apparel decoration software that allows you to set a variable distance between sequins in a segment.

Sequin Shine and Change

Users can also now have a better visualization of sequin designs within their software, as more realistic sequin renderings with shine effects are now in place. The type of sequin can be changed quickly by using simple keyboard shortcuts.

If you have been on the fence about getting into the sequin business, now is the time to investigate further. Software has made sequin design easier than ever before to create beautiful, high quality garments.
