error message when I try to open files

I'm using 14, and when I would try to take a dst file and convert it so I could edit it, my program would often crash, there was an upgrade on this page that I downloaded, it fixed this problem, but now, I am often getting a new error message that won't allow me to open some files.... is there a fix for this?

they are old files from elsewhere, yes
